Mountain Hunting Boot Case Study

We tested three variations of a leading insulated mountain hunting boot for thermal performance. One boot insulated with 200g leading lofted insulation, one boot insulated with 400g leading lofted insulation, and one boot insulated with Solarcore’s Sc_Foam 3mm insulation. The results show that 3mm Sc_Foam outperformed 200g of leading lofted insulation for CLO Value in the Toe Top, Toe Bottom, and Foot Bottom. Overall, the boot with Solarcore Foam has a higher average CLO value than the boots with leading lofted insulation with and without compression.

OROS Apparel Case Study

OROS Apparel, Solarcore’s first brand partner, is redefining the look of warmth in outdoor apparel. Their parkas, pants, gloves, and more deliver a sleek look while offering superior thermal properties to their puffy and lofted insulation competitors. Tested even under liquid‑nitrogen exposure (–321°F), OROS jackets maintained an internal temperature of 89°F (32°C), demonstrating unmatched insulation performance.

By adding just 2mm of Solarcore® insulation to the Bi-Frost’s existing lofted insulation stack, Helly Hansen has extended the boot’s comfort range by an extraordinary 10°C (18°F) — pushing the lower limit of thermal protection to -40°C (-58°F). This breakthrough positions the Bi-Frost Boot as one of the most advanced cold weather boots on the market today.

This collaboration underscores Helly Hansen’s commitment to technical innovation and performance-driven design — a commitment recognized by the prestigious Red Dot Design Award, which honored the Bi-Frost Boot for excellence in functionality, aesthetics, and material innovation.

Key Benefits of the Helly Hansen Bi-Frost Boot with Solarcore®:

  • Comfort rated to -40°C (-58°F)for extreme cold environments
  • +10°C thermal improvementthrough only 2mm of added insulation
  • Winner of the 2024 Red Dot Design Award
  • Maintains lightweight performance and mobility
  • Designed for professionals in arctic, alpine, and industrial cold weather conditions
